The Cascade Horizon Band is led by Sue Steiger, our only director since it was created in 2003 with a mere dozen members. During those years she has brought the band to ever-increasing levels of performance. That was recognized in 2010 when the band was asked to perform in the Oregon Music Educators Conference … making ours the first senior band to have that honor. This past July she was the host conductor of the New Horizon Band Camp in Bend. She also has been the guest conductor at the 2005 and 2008 band camps in Olympia, Washington.
Sue is both an educator and musician. She has completed her 33rd year of teaching including the last 19 years at High Desert Middle School. Over 200 students participated in her music programs each year and received superior and excellent ratings at district festivals. In 2008 she received the Rotary award for Excellence in Education.
Sue has been principal flutist in the Central Oregon Symphony since 1984. For 22 years she has had the honor of performing with the Cascade Festival of Music Orchestra. She is a member of Oregon Music Educators Association, Music Educators National Conference, Oregon Band Directors Association, the Central Oregon Music Educators Association and New Horizon Band Association.
A graduate of California State University Long Beach with a Bachelor of Music Degree she completed graduate work at California State University Long Beach, California State University at Los Angeles, Lewis and Clark College and Portland State University.
Sue now enjoys a well-earned retirement from the school system … and to the great pleasure of the band continues as our Music Director. She is loved by the members of the band and her good humor and ability has brought a group of musicians with a wide range of abilities up to a concert performance level, and that will carry on.
